   b. 1946
   Fashion designer
   Paul Smith made his name by revamping classic and traditional styles. He has a distinctive menswear fashion philosophy but no formal design training. Now with over 200 outlets for his R Newbold label in Japan alone, Smith opened his first shop in Nottingham in 1970 when he was unable to find the clothes he wanted on the current market. He mainly worked in wool, tweed and fine cottons, fashioning garments that appealed in the 1980s to both city gents and yuppies. He has been tirelessly copied by retailers such as Next, and he is responsible for reintroducing Filofaxes and boxer shorts in the accessories boom of the 1980s. In 1998, Smith launched his first women’s wear collection at the London Fashion Week; like the men’s suits, with which they have much in common, Smith’s new clothes were again characterized by external confidence and hidden luxury.
